A special story about love, dance, and immortality takes place in the late 1940s. A young man, dance master Mayer, arrives at a pulmonary sanatorium. His diagnosis is serious—tuberculosis. However, he does not give in to his illness and begins to actively fight it with dance and optimism. Gradually, he wins over other patients who had previously resigned themselves to their fate. Soon, however, his illness breaks out in full force and insidiousness. Facing death, he embodies human courage and a positive attitude towards life.

Teenager Kristina Kleinburger, daughter of the commander of a concentration camp, arrives from bombed-out Berlin to visit her parents, whose life represents a world of harmony and peace for her. Her parents try to reinforce her illusions with ballet lessons, which are to be given by a former Hungarian prima ballerina. In a single day, contrary to the intentions and plans of her father, a typical German officer, Kristina's ideas and illusions about her parents' society and the security of home collapse, and the whole perversity and monstrosity of the German war and totalitarian mechanism emerges before her with tragic inexorability and the echo of the approaching end of the war. The story, setting, and characters of the film are fictional, only the tragedy of their fates is real.

Its students consist of Griz, a hoggish stubborn but good-hearted pig; Bully Wooly Mammoth, a gentle giant who loves to play the piano; and Slogo and Logan, two Eastern-European relatives who come from a carnival and bring their circus-antics into the school with them. And it's not just the students: Miss Devine is an extravagant bohemian teacher with a pet "rarf" (an unknown species); the science lecturer, Dr Russell, is a walrus; and the music teacher thinks of himself as the new Frank Sinatra and always sings a song. Much of the school's involves talent agents from outer space, invisible strings seen only through imagination, and most notably live-action kids who stampede around when the bell rings (woe betide anyone in their path). However, in spite of all these insane occurrences, there is always a sane moral at the center of the story that aids in instructing a lesson to the students as well as the viewer.

Gustavo travels to the desert of Wirikuta in search of native species for his research. During his journey into the desert a series of strange events haunt him until one night he is assaulted, losing all of his belongings. The will to survive forces him to start the trek across the desert. It seems all is lost until Ana, his dead wife, appears. With the help of an old Huichol, Gustavo will confront his past and present life.
